The 2020 Vega Sicilia Alión (Ribera del Duero) is a superb expression of modern Spanish fine wine—100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), grown from some of the best terroirs in Ribera del Duero and meticulously managed in the style of Vega Sicilia.
This vintage was unusually dry until harvest, then impacted by rain in September, forcing the team to wait for the vines to re-concentrate their fruit. The result: a wine with enhanced freshness and verticality, subtly refined rather than power-heavy.
On the nose expect dark fruits—black cherry, blackberry—alongside herby undergrowth and subtle spice. The palate is structured but polished, with velvety, fine-grained tannins and a poised finish. At 14.5% ABV it offers real presence without tipping into excess.
With scores nearing the mid-90s and cellaring potential comfortably into the next decade, it’s very much worth acquiring now either to lay down or to open from 2025 onwards.
