This 2016 Gran Reserva from Marqués de Riscal (in the generous 1.5 L magnum format) exemplifies the elegance and maturity that Rioja aficionados seek. Crafted from old-vine Tempranillo (and supporting varieties) grown in Rioja Alavesa, it enjoyed extended oak ageing followed by bottle maturation before release.

In the glass it shows a rich, deep black-cherry hue with violet reflexes. On the nose, expect complexity: balsamic notes, ripe black fruit (plum, black cherry), cedar, hints of lavender and fine oak toast. On the palate it delivers generous blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, polished yet firm tannins, and flavours of mocha, clove, dark chocolate and orange blossom. The finish is long and refined, buoyed by lively acidity that promises further ageing potential.

For the serious collector or those seeking a show-stopper for a special dinner, this magnum offers both immediate pleasure and upside for cellaring. Serve at 16-18 °C and consider decanting for an hour to allow its layers to open.
